After enjoying the driest winter in memorable history, the rains have finally arrived in full force here in the Squamish valley. Not one to let the perpetually dark days and sounds of a downpour keep me from getting outside I decided to try something new. My theory was to use my umbrella to cover my camera then capture long exposures of the rain coming down. I hoped for streaky effect, but instead created the opposite. I was surprised to find that a 30 second exposure in fact showed no signs of rain, not in the sky nor on the waters surface.

It seems that as long as you are willing to look you will find calm in the chaos, and beauty in the darkness. This was likely the ugliest conditions I have ever tried to shoot in; I am not only pleasantly surprised with the outcome, but I am also inspired to keep testing these ideas as the rain continues.
